I thought this might be an alternative to spritzing your coins. Pick up some TSA compliant cosmetic jars from Target. Each one is big enough to almost fit an Eisenhower dollar and certainly will hold anything else. Fill it with water and a drop of your favorite cleaning liquid, optional. Drop in a coin and give it a good shake. dirt comes off much better. If you're REALLY concerned with the coin you can add some foam but really plastic isn't going to hurt silver/gold unless you're really banging it around.

When dirt fishing I always carry a small jar with olive oil in it. If I find a silver coin I just place it in the jar WITHOUT rubbing the dirt off. After I get home I rinse the coin or coins with hot water. I don't scratch them at all.

A coin dealer told me that trick.
