This was a surface find today in an area that was recently bulldozed. There was a house in this location circa 1860-1920s, perhaps. I have no clue as to what this is and it's driving me crazy! It appears to be stone, very precisely machined, broken off on one end. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what kind of stone it is. Sorry. It looks like graphite but it does not mark when rubbed on paper.

You guys are brilliant! Looks like a carbon rod out of a 6 volt lantern battery. Thanks so much.

I found something just like this recently but didn't get around to posting it. Mystery solved! It looks like the carbon rods have a variety of uses, not just batteries. Great ID!
