Calling in the experts for these lead screw cap type things!

I keep finding these in my 1880s site. They are super heavy and feel like a lead. These are the first two I found that we're not smashed. I'm hoping someone here can help

They look like plugs that go in 55 gallon oil drums. The drums have a large one and a small one. Hope this helps just a guess.
 
I was able to unscrew the grommet

not sure if it is same, but when I was a kid, I decided to take my great grandfather's coffee grinder apart. Saw something very similar. Best I can find in a picture is top right of this one. Like I said, not sure if it is what it is

Lol, seriously...

That might have been on a barrel, and a sample could have been taken by punching through the soft center of it.. Then sealed again with more lead? Or maybe wax?

Completely guessing...

The old black powder cans had lead caps, I think thats what it is.
