Flickr has billions of images on it, and if you get adept at searching, you can find millions of scanned, historic images posted to the site. Many times, users are not very good at tagging, so a bit of digging (something we're good at) is required to find collections that you like.

Once you do, you can build your own groupings of images for use in metal detecting or further research. Not only that, many people enter LONG narratives about the locations in the photo description. It's a gold mine.

I do that through my Forest Service sites they have old historicals of our area.
