I am sure most of us, one time or other, have had back trouble.

I get out when I can. The other day I only hunted for 10 minutes. My back is hurting so bad, I just can not bend down. When I do, I can not get back up because of the pain. It is in my lower back.
Been taking all kinds of pills. Went to the chiropractor to crack me back in shape.
Has any one tried then back braces. And do they work ?
I am NOT giving up this hobby. If I have to crawl on my hands and knees, I will.
I also been trying the ice pack and heat pad. Just do not know what to try next. Something has to work.
Thanks for putting up with my pain...

KEN

Do you ride a motorcycle or scooter?

Not trying to be funny, but when my back hurts, a bunch of good old hard work usually helps.. But mine is usually a crook, or pinched nerve or similar..

Good luck with it!

May sound a little off the wall but have you tried yoga. Alot of people swear by it. Have to find a good person who can walk you through everything properly to make sure your form is correct. I took a class last year, did not have any serious pains at the time but would sometimes have things in the body not playing nicely with me. They showed me some good stretches and poses that help relieve the pain and rebuild the strength. She was a really good instructor and made sure you only did what you could comfortably (or with slight discomfort) Didn't try tying me into any pretzels or anything off the wall. I was suprised I actually enjoyed it and felt alot better afterwards, (won't ever admit that to my wife though who about had to drag me kicking and screaming to the class)

You should see a Doctor. I had my L4/5 fused last August and pain has all but disappeared and I don't worry about structural issues with the fusion and titanium hardware holding things together and keeping my spinal cord rom being touched by the destroyed disk and vertebrae moving around.

Back issues and turn serious real quick! See a doc!

I used to have my lower back go out every few years. It would spasm and I would be unable to even walk. I'd spend few days in bed with muscle relaxers. During one of these spasm sessions I went to a different chiropractor who told me if I would do a stretch (just putting my hands on my hips and arching backwards) every day, I could probably avoid further problems. I'm not good about doing it daily, but as often as I remember. I haven't had any spasm sessions since. So far, it's helping a lot. My back problems are the result of a scoliosis.

I hope you get to feeling better soon! A sore back is just awful.

I have had problems with my back for several years. Pinched nerves, shooting pains, aches, etc.. 3 years ago I went to a specialist who did x-rays and ct scan. He told me I have Lumbar Facet Syndrome. It's where the holes in the spine get smaller and start to pinch the nerves. I was getting Cordozone shots which worked ok most of the time but tend to wear off after a few months. I got tired of that and asked the Dr. what the next step was. Radio-Frequency Ablation. They run a probe into your back and lay it along-side the nerve then zap the nerve with radio waves. It's supposed to separate the nerve and takes about a year to grow back. I had it done 2 months ago and am almost pain free. When I do fee a twinge it's way less than before. I can walk and function like normal.

Also, if your pain isn't severe enough for these things and you want to try something over-the-counter, Aleve will work better than Tylenol or Advil. Aleve is an anti-inflammatory which will help the cause of the pain, not just mask it.

Spinal x-rays are a good place to start. Find out whether the problem is muscular or structural (skeletal).

Pain, back pain in particular, just goes with my job. Unless someone here shears sheep for a living I've likely spent more time with my head lower than my butt over the last 20+yrs than about anyone else on the forum. I saw x-rays 15yrs ago, and it was scary back then with all the rotations, sub-luxations, anteriority, spondylosis, narrowed discs, degenerative disc disease, schmorl's nodes, etc...
The job sees to it that I get plenty of exercise, and beyond that I sleep on an air bed and take 400mg/day Ibuprophen. Anything less and I can't move, but anything more and I'm afraid that I'll run out of options too soon.

Now, that is something I have not tried yet. I have a sister that does yoga. I think I will give her a call and see what happens. I am sure it takes time, but worth it. Thank you.... KEN

WOW .. You all are great. So many things I can try. I think the yoga streatching might help.
I just do not want to be cut on. The only knife I like is the one I use for digging my plugs with.

One thing about this forum, No matter what the question or problem, Someone will be their to help or give good advice.

Thank you all for the help. You are the best.. KEN

Man! I'm so sorry to hear this Kenny! Nothing can shut a guy down more than that lower back pain when those muscles spasm and lock up!!

Along with all the great advice about stretching and all, I will add...theres these belts you can buy at the Home Depot...really wide and with elastic velcro fasteners...Intended to support that area of a guys back and direct the forces elsewhere...Like some sort of magic Cumberbund!

Guys bucking bundles of shingles up a ladder all day long, carrying off centered loads like sheets of 3/4" plywood or 12' sheets of drywall...5 gal pails of paint, sacks of concrete, tossing square hay bales etc..Construction guys use these belts (Olympic Weightlifters too) and they do work...

Also, it really does help to take an aspirin BEFORE hand! Like right in the morning first thing as you are waiting for the initial pot of coffee to come to a boil...while waiting, lay on the floor on your back and gently rotate your lower lumbar area and stretch...Very deliberately and Gently though...have The Weather Channel on and just try to relax and focus on a gently stretch of your hips and lower back........

Teeter Tables also work...especially for spinal compression...so see if you can try one out? I bought one off of CL a year or two ago and it was money well spent to get a guy lined up without a Chiropractor...

Once a guys back locks up good and tight though...you gotta figure out a way to get those muscles to relax...Flexerils, Tramadol, sometimes that 'Tens' electronic machine with the little stick on electrodes even can get those muscles to unlock...

Or Beer...lots and lots of beer works for me also! Readily available and No prescription required!...although, If I take an aspirin right off the bat, do those gentle stretches, drink some coffee, log into the Forum...relax my mind and body..Yeah!...I'm pretty good to go until the beer store opens at 7am!

That is good, while I don't have back problems myself, I have heard of some who seemed to have more problems after surgery, not saying that there is no successful back surgery, but from what I heard it's better if you can fix such problems without surgery.

Some people get a little panicky when pain strikes.

Back pain

Next trip to the Philippines have one of the Quack doctors look at it , won't cure anything . That and a little local rum and you won't feel a thing.

My wife and stretch our spine on an inversion table. It's where you hang upside-down, by the ankles. Recently my 81 y.o. father gave it a try.

Really seems to help after a couple sessions. That, and Ibuprofen.

The wide, Velcro waist bands do help a lot. If you wanna know if you need a doctor, wear one and swing a Compadre! If it still hurts, you need a doctor,

I'm right there with you. I have sciatic nerve pain in my left hip and down my left leg. A year or so ago it got so bad I couldn't even lay comfortably in bed and had a ______ of a time getting out of bed. I did the chiropractor thing and pain pills -- helped some and eventually it eased off and was virtually nearly pain free until recently -- it has come back. Sometimes it is severe. I haven't gotten up the "nerve" to go back to the chiropractor -- haven't got the $$$ and insurance won't pay for enough visits to get the relief I need. I'm told I have two bulging disks in my lower back. But I ain't giving up either!

When I get to hurting too bad I will lay down in a tub of hot water. It relaxes the muscles that tense up due to the pain. That relieves it for awhile! And I do have pain meds IF it gets too unbearable! :p

Ken, Look into a neoprene shoulder and back brace with a wide belt called Royal Posture. When my back gets bad I use it for a couple of days and I'm good to go.
