Default Is this a wire?

So I was digging at a recent permission and got a hit and dug about 3 inches down and saw this and freaked out a little. I was afraid to dig anymore because all I envisioned was digging into it and getting electrocuted! So, is it a wire? I wasn't going to post on here so I didn't add a size reference but it is about 4 inches long. It was about 1-2 feet running along the side of the driveway close to the road and about 30 feet from the house. The house was built in the mid 50's. I'm tempted to go back and dig it but I want some opinions on here first. Thanks!

I couldn't imagine there being a wire 3 inches down, but you never know. Better safe than sorry.

Could be a dog fence (invisible). Is there a post light or the like at the end of the drive?

There was a light post right by the house. But this is in the opposite direction by the road.

It's probably a telephone cable, or water line for sprinkler heads, not that uncommon. I'd just leave it alone rather than chance cutting into it.

Lots of towns have numbers you can call to find out where buried cables are.
