Hi guys. A couple days ago, I went metal detecting in my woods and stumbled upon this object, which I believe to be the cap part of a shotgun shell. Is that right? It seems that the part where the plastic tube would be is corroded and I found no trace of plastic. Also, the only word I made out so far is "repeater". Am I right? Thanks. (It was found 4-5 inches deep if that helps)

No plastic, it was paper. Head stamps are fun because you can use the markings to identify the date of manufacture. There is some detective work to it.

Oh wow I just saw the word Winchester on it! Thanks. Is this a modern shotgun shell? Thanks

Somebody on here led me to this site: www.headstamps.x10.mx/database.html
If you scrub the backside with a stainless steel pot scrubber, you should be able to make out the letters a little better.
here's a pic of one I recently found.

rreahard gave you a more specific date range for your particular shell, but for future reference, paper shells are generally from the mid 1960s back to around the 1880's. There are exceptions, as you can still buy paper or all brass shells today, but they are high-end or specialty and you're not likely to dig one up.
