I dug this a few years ago and figured it's time to get an ID.
Dug in Fort Brook area of Tampa which was occupied 1824- 1870's.

Looks to be a military hat badge - the style of the shield over the eagle looks to be Civil War era - the WW2 era shield was boxier -I can't find a match online at the moment but your timeframe sounds accurate - probably on the later end of it, at least... Great find.

I couldn't locate one without serious digging but a hat badge was my thought as well. Something about this really rings strong to pre CW for me. Definitely don't believe it is post CW at all, and I know it isn't post 1900.

"Drooped wing" eagles were popular in the federal era to about the 1830's , what does the back look like are there any attachment points ?
