I'm going to include this ring in a wrap up post for a private permission site I've been working this year, but in the meantime I thought I'd give it it's own post.

When I dug it I knew it was silver, and could tell it had a face, but it wasn't until I got home did I realize the head is cut out of a Mercury dime and then somehow welded onto a band. A lot of detail in the face was lost probably between wear and the hammering it took to bend it.

The band is definitely silver and probably made from melted coins. No silver markings, and just enough imperfections to suggest it was cast at home. Really well done.

A true coin collector or metal detectorist ring. It's a shame it's too small for me!

Given the history of the site and dates of the coins I've found, I'd say it was lost no later than the 1980s and probably a decade or two earlier.

That's a really neat ring !
I've heard it said that people would make jewelry from merc dimes,
making either earrings or cuff links from the head......:cool3:
