Absolutely, when public spots do not say you can't detect, then just detect them, because if you ask enough people you will find someone to tell u no, when there isn't even a rule against it
 
Congrats on some amazing old coins and great job on the research! Small towns are where it's at. Many small towns here in Wisconsin are only 100-200 people now but back in the 1800's were thriving little burgs with at least twice that many people along now defunct railroad lines, etc. Not only that but people are much more friendly than in the city, and that usually leads to hunting people's yards along the way. Congrats again!
