I know quite a few who regular this beach. I was going there today until I got this warning. Sad us humans pollute so much.

The Department of Health in Pinellas County (DOH-Pinellas) has issued an advisory for the waters at Fort De Soto's North Beach based on the marine water bacterial indicator recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This area should be considered a potential health risk to swimmers.

DOH-Pinellas conducts saltwater beach testing through the Healthy Beaches Monitoring Program. Water samples are analyzed for enteric bacteria (enterococci) that normally inhabit the intestinal tracts of humans and animals which may cause human disease, infections or rashes.

The presence of enteric bacteria is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from storm water run-off, pets, wildlife and sewage. The purpose of the Healthy Beaches Monitoring Program is to determine whether Florida has significant beach water quality problems.

Weather permitting, the next sampling will be conducted on June 12.

Water quality classifications are based upon the EPA's recommended standard for enterococci of no more than 70 colony forming units per 100 milliliters of marine water. For information about DOH-Pinellas, go to

Man, I would like to see the results at some of spots I hit during peak season. No joke, people take dumps right in the middle of the beach.

Yuck! I had to avoid a San Diego beach back in the 80s due to similar nastiness, after traveling all the way from Colorado to see the ocean! Did get to visit Camp Pendleton instead where the beach was clean (and awesome) so the trip wasn't a disappointment.

Shhhhh, don't tell the tourists.
Strong tides & SW winds should flush that out pretty quick.

I like that idea but from what the rangers say there are LARGE signs telling the tourists. The East beach is still open to swimming but that beach always looks like dirty water since it is a bay beach. North beach is beautiful and attracts the tourists. You could use a hazmat suit, some guys would do anything for yellow.

Does that suit work under water or is it just for wet sand. I don't mind if there is pee in the water if it's water proof.
