Default How should i clean my silver coin?

Today I found a 1918 Merc. I washed it off but it is still hard to see. I want to clean it but I don't want to scrath or damage it. Anyone know a good way to clean it?

I'm not sure the traditionalists here would approve but if you don't care about numismatic value, (and I don't unless it's a key date coin) I've found that a couple dabs of toothpaste works quite well in cleaning silver, both coins and jewelry.

I just put a dab on my fingertip and gently rub it in on both sides, rinse it off and dry with a soft towel.

Hope this helps!! HH!!

Jonah, don't clean your SILVER coins. Leave them the way they are. Cleaning them would take the numestic value away from them. Cleaning them would wash away details from the coin, which investor just love. If you must, rinse in distilled water without rubbing it. NOT tap water.

If it's not a key date (check first) and you are keeping it for your collection then the toothpaste or same method with a little baking soda and water.Gentle is the word of the day here.Try and get a before and after photo up on here.

I use baking soda & a light rub on my non-key dates.

Yep, do not clean other than rinsing in water.

You're asking cleaning advice with no picture. NEVER listen to an answer given without someone having seen it. (there's enough bad advice even when it's seen)

Default Electrolisys

Imuse a short 30 to 40 second burst of light electrolysis to loosen things up, then a very light baking soda scrub to neutralize the process and get the rest of the crud off. Silver coins just gleam after doing that. Only do this for non key date coins you will be keeping for your personal collection.

Default cleaning it

pour yourself 2 gallons of bleach, drop the coin in, then put the whole concoction in the microwave for 30mintues on high. this should evaporate your coin and solve any problems.

(dont really do this)
