Well after a long time thinking of upgrading to the F70 or the Xterra 705, I pulled the plug on 705:laughing::laughing:. It will be here soon. I am going from the F2 to the Xterra 705. I hope I dont get to deep to soon with the settings and so on. I am a coin shooter and want all the advice I can get.
A couple of questions
1 To begin with should I leave the settings alone in the coin mode, just to get used to it? I noticed the sens. setting is preset I think at 16. Should I leave it there for the first few weeks til I get used to it? Or should I bang it up?

2 Has others used the factory preset coin mode and just tweaked a few settings? I know ground conditions are different everywhere. I just wanted to know others preferred coin shooting settings. Even if they just want to give them to me in a PM.

I want to take this process slow. I dont want to jump right in and have unstable ID's and falsing. I also, have my eye on the 3Khz coil. When I look at the manual Im guessing I would go in coin mode then disc pattern 2? Then go from there?

I just want to make this an easy transition. Who's got my back if and when I need help? Thanks to all. DD

I started out in AM mode and never looked back ... just have to learn to ignore the low iron tones and listen for the good tones and it rewarded me for it many times over, when you use a pattern and it blanks out on a bad target you can miss a good target right next to it

Thanks guys. I ve already read Randy's book a few times along with the coil steps. I have a ? for you. I know the differences in a Concentric coil and a DD coil. From what I understand the Concentric coil goes ever so slightly deeper than a DD equal to its size. My ? is at depth the con. coils cone shape imprint is rather small and circular. The DD coil imprint at depth is like a small brick. I just feel like, the DD coil, it would not allow me to miss very many targets. The Con. coil the imprint is smaller and makes me think I will miss something. A good example of this is when I found my first sterling ring with the F2 with the 10" coil. It would not pick it up unless I was exactly in the center of the coil. I mean I had to be right in the center.
It is probably a toe ring. Its that small. Thanks guys.

shallow targets with a Concentric coil can drive you nuts because there can be a lot of targets under your coil at once ... a Concentric coil throws a V shaped signal down meaning shallow it sees a lot of stuff but the deeper you go the less it actually sees, a DD coil throws more of a cateye shaped signal which is a sliver running down the center of the coil so it lets you separate targets much easier

the Digger coil from Coiltek is a Silver killer and great on copper too ... still hits good on gold too but silver and copper it really shines

Yea I was checking the 6" digger also, but you loose some depth too. Im guessing if you go with that coil you can turn up the sens. higher? Without to much falsing?

yes but it's still goes pretty deep ... dug lots of dimes and pennies at 6" with no problems ...and yes you can run the sens. higher than the stock coil 9" coil
but you might have to swing a tad slower

Just to get started, turn it on, push the chevron button. Sensitivity is the first thing displayed. Set it @ 22 to start with. (If it's too "chatty" once you start swinging, back it off one notch at a time.) Later I'll tell you the ideal way to start up for a hunt, but for now this will do.
Push the chevron button again. The next up is Noise Cancel (very important). Hold the coil 1-2ft above and parallel to the ground and hold it there while you press the Prospector/Coin mode button....then wait 20seconds and it will indicate that it's finished with a tone sequence. It has just Auto Noise Cancelled.
Press the chevron button again. Now you're looking at Threshold. Set it to be as minimal as it can still be clearly audible. The machine keeps your settings separate between headphones and speaker, so setting it w/o phones will be a higher number than with phones. Ambient noise and/or your choice of phones will be part of the equation as to where it should be, as will your hearing.
Press the chevron button again. This is where you set Volume. Again the 705 keeps separate settings for speaker or headphones. I recommend headphones that have a volume control built in, and adjust volume with it and have the machine turned up to 30 (max).
Press the chevron button again. Tones. How many would you like? Coming from an F2 you're used to 4. You can set it for four to start with if you think that it will be easier. It will sound less busy than 99 (actually 28), but eventually 99 is where you'll want it.
Now press the Pinpoint button to leave the settings menu.

Press the Tracking button. (looks like a declining sine wave) With Tracking turned on you don't need to concern yourself with GB.
Press the pattern button to select a pattern. Pattern 2 is probably a good one to start with. It notches out a lot of junk and will keep you from being overwhelmed with too much audio. You will eventually go AM or to a more open Disc Pattern to help learn proper swing speed, and so you can be the judge as to whether or not a tone "sounds right enough to dig".

Finally, get busy. Swing slow enough to isolate each hit. If you swing too fast it will let you know by falsing horribly. A SENSitivity setting that is too high will cause excessive falsing as well, but try slowing down before deciding to turn the SENS down.

HAVE FUN!!
GL & HH!

Yea I was checking the 6" digger also, but you loose some depth too. Im guessing if you go with that coil you can turn up the sens. higher? Without to much falsing?
It's a HOT coil! So you do need to go slow with it, but depending on conditions it might not lose much depth compared to the stock 9" CC. And being as HOT as it is, it's not uncommon to run it with SENS in the high teens.

Welcome to the Minelab Club. I am a relatively new member myself but I am having more fun detecting than I ever have since I first started. Once you start to learn the ML language silver coins just start poppin out of the holes like prairie dogs! MY advice would be swing slow and hit all areas from different angles. Hope you have great success and you have some fun, cuz that is what we all do this for anyway.

I have an x-terra 70 and I love it. I'm sure you will love your new machine. I have a couple videos on youtube of how I set mine up when I first started and it worked great. Just type in my name on here into youtube and they should come up.

Thanks Longhair
I will do exactly that and when I feel Im ready to move to higher settings on the machine I will ask for assistance. The third set of info you gave me is great stuff. The part 1 and part 2. GOOD STUFF. Thanks for everyones help and I watched some videos Logit3k. Check out my "Project Bleachers" thread in the stories section. DD

Easy instructions
Bigger coil=deeper
LF Coil=silver
MF Coil=general purpose
HF=Gold
DD coil bad soil
concentric coil you must overlap your swings
Large DD coil cover more area.
On a personal note: dig all deep signals 30 and up. A silver dime at 7 inches will ring 30-32(like zinc or copper penny) a shallow one will ring in at 38-40.

Yeah riff the 305 is a boss piece of hardware. I like minelab cause they have better build quality than fisher and garret. And as far as I can tell way better discrimination which serves right since Australia has iron laced soil and it would have to be in order to find anything.
