Ace250 depth readings (?)

I have a new Ace250, purchased last December,
2005.

My question is as follows:

When I am detecting in All-Metal mode and the machine signals a target at 6" depth, I swing the coil to the side, hold down the Pinpoint button
and swing the coil slowly back over the target
area until both the audio response reaches max.
and the visual black-bar indicators reach the far-
right side of the console screen and I know I'm
right over the target. At this point the depth
reading has changed to 2".

My understanding is that when I switch to
Pinpoint mode, it is the same as being in All-Metal
or it's equivalent. So, if these two modes are the same, why does my machine report a
shallower depth in Pinpoint mode ?

Anyone out there know the answer to this ?

Thanks for your help.

I ignore the depth readings while pinpointing. It would be great if they were accurate, but...<shrug>

oh crap I didn't know that! (as he goes back to all the holes he gave up on when he didn't find the coin at 2 inches)

Thanks Epi-hunter and Oklahunter for your replies.  That clears it up for me !

And ahardy17.........Thanks for the
I have faith in the Ace, that when it says "ding-dong" there is definitely a find below. I dig until my yella-fella tells me the find is no longer in the hole, but now in
the dirt pile. Then I look through the dirt pile until I locate the find !
Sometimes I can locate the find with my
eyes, other times the find is so small I must divide the dirt into smaller piles and use either a magnet or the Ace
to locate it.
Hope this helps !

hi Todd! I do not pay any attention to the depth reading during pinpointing. after I pinpoint it I swing back over the center and check the depth before I dig, just like what is said in the paragraph from the garrett site posted by epi=hunter.
