My concern with the harbor freight pp is how long it will last. I know I haven't used mine detecting yet and it already acted up by beeping constantly when it was warm.. my brother had his quit working after his first time out..maybe he just got a bad one.. if I were to buy a new whites .. I would buy the bullseye 2.. it just looks more compact..anyone ever try the bounty hunter pp ? Its cheap.. and if it lasts this would be another good starting choice.. and it looks comfortable to use

Don't have the cash for one right now, so I got the HF opened it up adjusted the sensitivity, put a new button on it, and a vibrating motor. I love it and with the motor its great because it seems to shake more the closer you get to object. I think I will be happy with my HF for quite some time. But im green so who knows, it works well to me!!!

For around 17 bucks it is without a doubt the biggest bang for the buck. Of course you'll want to upgrade to the ProPointer eventually.

check my thread on supertuning the HF. kill the led by cutting one lead to it and bending it back-that saves battery, replace the push button with a rocker, supertune it, coat the end with bedliner, now it has all the range of a garrett. my huntin buddy has a garret, we tested them side by side and mine would do just as good as his.

It was actually a reply to this thread, sorry. http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=114372 I made a steel band to fit the shaft of the HF about a half inch wide, slide it on while scanning a target, find the spot that give max range, fix it there with tape, rubber band, whatever, now it has max range all the time. i can turn the sensitivity up and get 3-4 inches but thats too much for pinpointing.

Convenience of use makes a difference also. The Propointer shape makes it easy to grasp and holster. The HF P/P is a pain in the a$$ to use. Maybe a home made holster would be fine but holding it isn't very ergonomic. I jewelry hunt sports fields and if I used the HF, I would only cover 1/3 the area I can cover with the Garrett. If you think about it, the HF is really not the bang for the buck that everybody says it is.
Look at the posts...bedliner, replace, mod, etc....How much money did these users actually spend in time and extra parts? Even after its modded, its cumbersome and will eventually break because its cheaply made and not designed for the abuse we put it through. BTW, I'm speaking from experience. I had 2 HF pinpointers. I'm not dissing anybody on a budget...you do what you have to do. But if you're one that knows that buying the right tool for the job can make or break you....spend the money, you won't regret it. I don't work for or sell Garrett products and probably wouldn't own one of their detectors unless it was given to me, but they make one heck of a pinpointer....Credit where credit is due! |

agree and I will get a garrett when I am able, just as you say, budget restricted me to the HF for now, all materials were on hand except the bedliner which I got to coat my coils and did the HF as an afterthought.

I put on a new button, vibrating motor, and adjusted pot sensitivity cost me about $7 and 15 minutes in work time. __________________ |
