Not a very good contest, I admit.
I will do better here in 2018.

The mystery item was a copper token good for 20 cigars.
I am guessing it is from the mid to late 1800's based on other items found in the area.

The strange thing is that they would have used such a small token (smaller than one cent) for something with at least 50 cents value (figure 20 cigars at 2.5 cents each)
