My buddy borrowed my ACE250 and found a bayonet buried in his driveway. Does anyone know the era?

Can you get a close up of the socket end? and do you think it is safe to be handing a rookie an ace250 ? lol . and a length measurement would be nice

I'm a Civil War re-enactor and it looks like a CW bayonet. If the pic was bigger I could be more sure.

Sorry to laugh but it reminds me of Alec Baldwin in that commercial " I am not a pilot but I played one in a movie"

I have an 1881 Trapdoor Springfield (no, I didn't dig it) and it's bayonet looks very much like this one. Bigger pics and measurements would help with the ID, as well as a pic of the barrel end. Is the blade triangular as you look at it end-on?

**EDITED** I posted mine as you were posting your last post, you certainly seem to have a Springfield bayonet. There were many changes to them over the years and there are some great websites out there that help ID'ing the variations. Most of my sources are in print but I will see what I can find link-wise and post back here. What a neat find for a rookie to make!! Now he needs to get an MD of his own and sign up here.

Thanks... I updated the post with a link of a bigger pic, I think. I will ask him to take more pics.

You should measure the inner diameter of the muzzle ring. for 1855 bayonet it is about 0.78" while in 1873 Springfield bayonet it is 0.73"

Thanks Allan... I am asking him to do a little electrolysis.

Tell him to be very careful. With thin pieces of iron like that, too much electrolysis can burn through it and end up snapping off the tip. Or so I've been told, I've not been lucky enough to dig a bayonet just yet!
