Can someone explain how to use a pinpointer?

Im just wondering,
I see some out there,but do you wave it over like a wand,or do you just point the tip of the pinpointer strait down so that its just the tip "I dunno maybe a 1/4th inch" scanning for the target?
Also how deep will these find a target?

First off I don't have one yet, but plan to buy one from tony when the weather breaks.

They are limited in range and made to find something once you have it pinpointed with your detector. You poke around the hole or plug with it. It will go off when you are very near the target. It won't replace pinpointing with the detector.

If the target is an inch i will rake mine across the ground if it doesn't pick it up.i dig out a plug of ground and run it over the top of my MD coil if it isn't in there i will get the pinpointer and run it around the hole that finds it most of the time.if it is in the plug i run it around it .saves a lot of time
