Hey guys. I found this item at an old stage coach station in about 1993 with my CZ5. I have seen ID tags online that look pretty close to this on. On the back which is pretty smooth has N.Y.S.V. (NewYork State Volunteers). Along the rim reads. co 3 144th reg. Thomas S Schott. The Eagle Side as The War Of Union 1861,2,3.
Any Ideals? This is my favorite find and I have been doing it since the mid 80's

The co. 3 is probably wrong, they usually had letter designations for a company. I'll bet you can check the New York archives on line to find out more. You should even find Thomas Scott and his service record there. At least I have done so with Illinois and Pennsylvania regiments.

I think it is Thomas M Scott Co C I will have to put it under a good magnifying glass.

I did find some more info. He mustered in at the age of 19 on Aug 25 1862. promoted Corporal April 15 1863 and then Sergeant Oct 1 1864. Mustered out on June 25 1865 @ Hilton Head SC

that's just crazy cool you should write your story on your mechines website see if u can get in the magizine

Thanks for the great info Rebel

You're quite welcome. I just was lucky to be able to Google the Regt and it came up.

Thanks go out to the Veterans that got this down on paper as soon as they could before time & age blurred their memories.

HISTORY OF THE 144TH REGIMENT. 329

Scott, Thomas M. 20; Bovina, N. Y., Aug. 27, 1862; pro. to Corp. April 18,
1863; to Sergt. Oct. 1, 1864; mustered out June 25, 1865, expiration of
service; address Laird, Neb.
Steward, John. 24; Liberty, N. Y., Aug. 17, 1862; died Oct. 6, 1863, at Folly

I found some more info on him on Gary Myers 144th NY Home page. Pretty much the same only he has his age @ 19 when he joined.
I also came a cross 6 more Scotts from Deleware County NY who also served in the Union army. I would bet some of them where related somewhat.(Deleware County Genealogy and History Site)

Thanks guys for all the comments.
