Lump of old lead found in woods civil war campsite?

Here is an lump of old lead I found I think it's old but could I be wrong I heard that during the civil war they would melt lead to start fires...

The lead had paper around it

Lead was melted in pot's to make bullets during down time at camp fires.

It could be. I'm not sure how to find out, but I would say it was due to the location you found it. The solders did the same thing during the Rev. war also.

It was very deep and under a large sized rock

Lead was used for so many different things for so many years, there's no telling what that was used for. If only it had some kind of identifying marks or patterns, that would help to date it...

Well said Jeff,there’s just no way of knowing,and it doesn’t matter much without the provenance but if that is the bare surface of the lead piece it does appear to be quite old from the oxidation. I’ve got a decent collection of bullets that I basically dug by accident and the ones that have been in the ground a long time are WHITE WHITE! You know the ones... :grin:
