I just bought $1,000.00 in halves from my bank and got skunked. First off I had to wait a 2 weeks for the bank to order them. When I went in to pick them up, the teller told me that if I was looking for silver, there wouldn't be any. They get the rolls from Brinks and they go through them all before they roll 'em. Plus she forgot to mention that there was a 5 dollar charge for the order.
As far as a dump place, I found that a casino will gladly take them.

Sorry about your no-silver boxes. That teller is WRONG about the silver being filtered out at the wrapping place. That's a false rumor they spread to try to discourage hunters. Keep it up and you WILL find silver. The $5 fee stinks though. You might try finding another bank to order for you that has no fees. Good Luck.

Yep it is a big lie, been searching brinks halves and dimes boxes for yrs now, had a lot of boxes with silver, brinks does NOT search coins

Wow, thats 55 lbs of coins (2000 Coins).

Have you thought about having Brinks just deliver them to your door?

Their shipping might be cheaper.

My bank told me the other day I can't order any at all....that does not make sense.

People have to stop believing that brinks, garda or anyone else who delivers coins to the banks "searches" them. How in the world would they have the time? First off, they have to count them and then "machine" roll these to go back out to the banks. I really don't believe they have something built into these machines that would sort out silver otherwise people wouldn't continue to have the occassional succeses they do. (and I'm talking about BRW not CRW). The fact is though that these stopped circulating over 40 years ago and people realised back in the 70's that there was a profit to be made pulling them when they went out of circulation. The majority of them were pulled then, we're just getting lucky now to be pulling what they have missed over the years, what others didn't even no they had, and what people now don't no what they have and turn back into circulation.

While it's a small number of folks, I've talked to around 50 or so people about what I do (friends, co-workers, family and the such) and none of them even blink an eye towards interest in it. And a lot of them didn't even no there was still silver in circulation.

The fact is, you're going to get skunked WAY MORE than you're going to be succesful. The posts you see on here about some of those guys finding ANYTHING over 10-15 silvers in a box, be it dimes or halves, are the exception, not the rule.

ok, off the soap box. To the original poster, was she saying that brinks or garda were searching them? Or was she saying the bank was searching them after delivery and before giving them to you? If it's the banks and they give them to you re-wrapped, I'd hand them back and tell them to shove em.....................well, you get the point.

I used to work on ATMs and the guards I worked with told me that employees would "buy" collectible currency from the company and did it with permission. It is conceivable that armored company employees are running a clandestine silver farming operation that would not be detectable on the books.

Armored companies aren't allowed to farm currency because they are part of the banking system. If a company is breaking the law it wouldn't surprise me in the least, but they are required to treat all currency at face value.

How long ago? High prices get people's attention.

Q4 2009 to Q1 2010

Now i cant say that the distribution centers didnt, but you would not believe the amount of coin they house. It would take years of searching...

But at my branch location, no silver sorting at all.

It must be to discourage CRH.

I have a good friend who is a teller at a bank and they HATE customers who want halves by the box. I guess it's a huge pain in the keister for them or something, plus the bank makes zero money on that transaction as opposed to a deposit. She said a few old guys come in and buy ungodly amounts of half dollars and everyone rolls their eyes as soon as they walk through the door

KT concurs that any rumors of sorting companies grabbing silver out of the millions of coins they handle is baloney. They just do not have time! Now in the boxes KT has bought...which started early this month...He has recovered several 40% silvers and no 90%ers of any type. KT believes this is due to the fact that early coin hunters have strongly cleaned the circulating currency of almost all of those...BUT...now old hoarders and casual coin collectors are passing away and the families have not been told the value of such items and they dump them at the bank or more specifically in local coin machines...that eventually gets back to the bank as boxed rolls that we walk in and order! So who knows when the coins got into the machine at a bank, the actual circulation pattern for bagged coins...My bank tells me the coin machine coins must go to the coin machine company and then are cleaned, counted and rolled before going to a repository to go back out to banks.

KT thinks therefore that the odds of you ever hunting the same coins twice is very low.

And so what if KT only finds some 40%ers ....heck, better to be a bottom skimmer and be getting silvers than to not mess with it and be gettin nuttin!:laughing::laughing: To date this year, KT has recouped from CRHing way more in silver than He did all last year MDing...He certainly loves to coin shoot but also loves watching the playoffs (and the ProBowl this weekend) while sifting a box for silver! :gettinmoney:

If you could see some of the coins that I've pulled out of Bank wrapped rolls, you'd have told her she was full of doodoo on the cleaning part.:lol:

Not only are they not cleaned, there are times when we find foreign coins, tokens and other items about the same size as the half dollar. I'd say the coin rolling machine doesn't elimate anything, including the silver. Here's a picture of some of the things we've found inside Brinks rolls of half dollars.

Those are really cool. I've found some neat ones in nickel and penny rolls but never anything in a half roll. I'll have to post some pics soon of some of the oddballs.

Well if your bank is wrapping them KT would expect you to find most anything in half rolls, but my bank only bags them from the machine and then the machine company comes and picks up the bags...they are not rolled at the bank! The boxes are packed by the company with rolls, glue sealed, and then delivered upon demand to major banks from who the branch gets deliveries once a week from., if ordered...Don't know about YOUR bank, but thats how MY bank does it!

KT does admit the coins dont appear to be cleaned much, but they do not have any dirt or trash in with them...that's what KT considers cleaned...they certainly are not tumbled...perhaps only dry vibrated to knock off any loose dirt, sand, grit etc that would mess up a rolling machine!

Finally, KT would love to find some of those foreign coins in some of His purchased rolls...think they are really neat finds, even tho they likely are not worth even 50 cents each!:laughing: The inherent coin collector in KT enjoys looking at different styles of coinage!

Tellers discouraging me

I was told today as I picked up my second box of halves that the Brinks guy informed my teller that Brinks has a machine that spits out all of the silver. I sense a little tension from these tellers (even though I bought them a dozen donuts last week), but they will order me halves for free, so I told them I'd check anyway. Maybe I'm just crazy, but even if they DO sort, they aren't finding EVERYTHING. I check dates too, looking for key dates and coins from mint sets. But I suspect they just don't like having to go into the vault once a week and lift the heavy box. I suspect the Brinks guy doesn't want to deliver the heavy box either. So I keep on.

Im just wondering why Brinks would separate them out? Are they in the silver business now? Also what type of machine they use to detect silver in different domination. Just doesnt sound that truthful. Now if we had magnetic coins, and they were taking all the silver out of that, I could see that being easier
