This bullet was my only interesting find yesterday during a hour and a half hunt at a former home site turned farm field that I’ve worked over pretty hard here in NW Ohio. I have very limited knowledge on ammunition, but I’m guessing it’s fairly modern. I suppose it’s possible it might be a little older, maybe 1890s to early 1900s. I was just curious to see if anyone more knowledgeable than me might have a better idea of date or ID for it.

It seems to be .45 caliber, measuring the base with calipers. Height is 0.756” from base to flattened top. The base is perfectly flat as well, so I’m guessing it’s a cartridge slug. Weight is 18.45g. I’m hoping the reeding throughout the grooves might be a distinctive clue.

The home site was active between the middle 1800s to the 1960s.

Thanks for any ideas!

I think such reeded cannelures started to appear in 1880's or so..and are still in use.

Voriax

Weight is 284 grain, flat nose, flat base, cast lead, no jacket, .45 cal.

A match would be for the .45 Colt (long Colt) cartage.

Although there may be other .45 cal rounds this could have come from.

Age is real hard to tell. As Voriax said- 1880s to present.

Thanks Voriax, thanks waltr! I knew it would be a longshot to nail down a narrow date range, but everything you guys shared is excellent, helpful info. Much appreciated!
