One good way to get permission to get on land, where you wouldn't normally be allowed on, is to organize a charity or fund raising dig.

A member of our club has done this a number of times, and raised nearly £1000 over the last couple of years, for his local scout group.

Get the scouts involved, they can do drinks and BBQ, get some portable toilets on site, and you are away !

Get a local paper involved, it's all good PR for the hobby.

We usually have our local Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) on site as well, to record finds, and take care of anything which comes under the treasure act.

This is our FLO, Caroline. She is based at Colchester Museum in Essex. Pictured here at a fund raising event last year, photographing finds.

Our club wasn't directly involved with the scout fund raising, so we can't take any credit for that. Although the club rally did raise money for repairs to a local church.
