Put a volume control on headphones??

We have the Garrett headphones but here in Texas it is just to hot man, so I was poking around Circuit City the other day and they have some really nice looking smaller type headphones and I would love to try a set but only one set had volume control and it was the cheapies. I was wondering though, couldn't I buy a nice set and the cheapies with the volume control and cut the wires and just put the volume control on the better set? Any help much appreciated.
