How will it pay for itself?

The term "pays for itself" depends on who you ask. Most would say that if a machine costs say $500, then once you've dug things you can sell or spend for $500, the machine has paid for itself. As for me, I look at it a bit differently. The very first time I go out and use it, the machine has paid for itself with the fun I get out of using it. Then it keeps on paying for itself every time after. Not to mention the fresh air, peace, exercise and possible health benefits, both physical and mental. The valuables I find are the frosting on the cake. You be the judge...........
Couldn't have said it better if I tried.;)

Fantastic comments, friends!

I really appreciate all the replies to this question.
Myself, I'm in it for the thrill of the hunt, wondering who lost this here, and thinking am I the first to touch this in x number of years.

It's a passion I had as a child, but never had the opportunity to make it happen until last month when I bought my Ace.

Please don't think I'm in it for any other reason.

I was just making a comment/question on words I read in another post.

You have all giving me some great ideas, and thoughts about our awesome sport/hobby!

It would be super to make a great find, but if all I get are rusty square iron nails like I found today, I will be happy!
Hell, I only paid $68 for my machine!
Value in this hobby to me, is in all the things you have described in your comments.
I won't lie, though. I would love to find something really amazing.

I am enjoying the fresh air and the tranquility that I feel when listening to the tones.

...and yes, when I go back to visit my family in Florida, you can guarantee that my Ace will be in my pack!

It doesn't matter what your reason to be in it is. You have the right to dream. We all do. I won't find a Spanish galleon loaded with gold up here, but I make some incredible finds. One find at a time.

Like Scuba said, your reason for metal detecting is totally up to you and you don't have to justify it to anybody else. For me, I'm looking forward to getting outside and just finding some cool stuff. The monetary value isn't important to me. Would it be nice to find items worth money, heck ya it would, and maybe I will but I won't be disappointed if I don't.

You said it better than me!

Now, I'm looking at the weather trying to figure out when my next day out will be!

Safe hunting, boys and girls!

Hey all!

Today i read another post where someone is congratulated on their new MD and then: "it will pay for itself..."

I'm new to this so I have to ask: How does that happen? :?:
Do we sell the stuff we find on eBay or a pawn shop?
Are there specialists in the field who buy our finds?

I'm not being a smart aleck, I really want to know.
I want to pay off my Garrett ACE 250 and keep working my way up to some of the more advanced machines.

Thanks for listening to me... again. :mder:

Well, look at it this way.... Let's say you like to fish. Bass fish. You spend at least $15000 on a good, mid level boat. Another $500 at least on rods, reels and tackle. Takes a while to get to any lake, so got to have a good truck to pull it. So how many bass do you have to catch to pay for that boat? Nah, you fish for the fun of it! Thinking every cast may bring that first 13-pounder! But it's really just the 'Hunt that's the joy of it. Same with .metal detecting. For example, I've been doing this since the 1980s. I'm sure no pro,but I've found silver coins, saw mill pay tokens, civil war minie balls, gold rings, Union army buttons, but one of my favorite things I ever found was a dented-in Confederate infantry button. Not worth a lot, but it was one of the few things I found in a long days hunt. But it proved that the research I had dome to try to locate a civil war training camp I'm East Texas that .my grandmother told me about when I was a child had really been about where she said it was! I can't put a price on that!

Well, for one thing, a metal detector is geared towards finding money, golf clubs, not so much!

Ever tried digging with a nine iron? Divots don't count -

I had a friend who went into a sand trap and never came out....I swear he was digging a hole to China.
I'm going on 2 years but really about 7 months of hunting (Winters here in Michigan & some other issues limited my time some). I've found a lot of awesome thing including many silver coins (including a SLQ), solid silver spoon, 14 k religious pendant, sterling silver religious pendant, Civil war token, super cool snake and pelican pendant, crotal bells, great seal button etc. I've only hunted 2 family properties 1 permission and 1 park. Everyone of my finds are worth more than my AT Pro cost, or at least on my mind they are. Lol
Sorry so long I just couldn't quit posting!

Super cool stuff. thanks for sharing!

You know, ScubaDetector, it was underwater detecting I was first drawn to living in Florida my first 31 years of life!

Your treasures make me want to go back!

Some folks like us water hunters find a LOT of gold. We actually can make money. Look at my website and you will understand.

Never sell to pawn shops. Sell on the net or to friends. Also you can sell to refineries. Each year I find enough to pay for my adventures, gas and incidentals.

Land detectorists can find enough but it is a lot of work. Last year just one find was worth 1472.00 in scrap gold. However I found almost 4 grand in gold last year. My best year was 27 grand. THAT IS NOT THE NORM.

However, if you don't go out and swing, you won't find anything. Adventure, fun, relaxation, anticipation, and enjoyment are all part of the equation to a fun hobby.

Last years gold treasure:

You have to spend the time and enjoy the hunt and not expect anything great and get disappointed.

It depends on how you view it.

1. Given enough time, you will dig enough clad to "pay for" your machine.

2. Eventually you may find gold and silver with greater value than your machine, I've done this at least two times over with my $999 machine, but I don't sell the stuff.

3. Unlike golf clubs or skis, once you pay for a detector, it's essentially "free" to use. No lift tickets, no greens fees, just go do it. So in that sense, it pays for itself.

I'm sure there are other ways it can "pay for itself" it all depends on how you view it.

It's the thrill of the hunt that does it for me. If I hunt hard and often, I find a fair amount of clad. This year, my wife and I are at $63 in clad plus I found 4 rings and she has found 1. I also found a nice 24" silver necklace/chain.

It's fun when you get into the zone and connect with the detector and for a while, you get lost in the hunt.

Find gold or silver, find a good local buyer who pays a good % of spot price and repeat. It happens much faster if you can find gold rather than silver :lol::lol:

"it will pay for itself..."
Hitting a big prize under the ground is like winning a lotto.
A detector paying for itself? With time and the right finds?
Yes.
But if you speak of your labor, your gasoline cost, that special
digging tool you needed off of ebay,etc.,etc.
It's a hobby.Simple as that.Some love it.That would be me.
Good hunting.Enjoy it.And always think of a day m. detecting is
a day of getting away from the grind or getting out in the great outdoors.

You have to also look at what you like to look for.

I am a coin shooter, I just enjoy a good coin and the artistic detail that goes into the coins. I am not a relic hunter I do not care to dig up old horse shoes or other iron. I will do it for archeological digs but not for my normal time.

I once went to a place where an old fort stood in Colorado on a club hunt. I wanted to find a coin of any type. I found more bullets than you could shake a stick at and a couple of other items that were neat but not a coin. I know there are others on here that those bullets would of been a great find and just finding them would be worth it in there minds the cost of the detector.

I do it for fun and hope to get enough to pay off the next detector. Just have to get out more.

Ray
