Dug this in the yard of a house from the 40s. At first, when I saw the red, jewel looking thing, I thought I had found a huge class ring! Seems to be a threaded cap to something. Maybe light passed through it? Look familiar to anyone?

Some old radios etc had indicator lamps (power on) with lens caps like that one.
Could also be from industrial electrical equipment.

It is called a pilots lamp, they come in several colors and I believe they are for automobile fenders. Google pilots lamp and check the images. Probably from the 40's or 50's

That is a indicator light jewel. They unscrew to allow replacement of a small light bulb. Used on classic Fender guitar amps as well as many other things.

I believe they were used for many purposes, I have seen references for small electronics, music, auto, motorcycles and even aircraft. They still make the faceted type that you have found, although I think the one you found shows plenty of age. Still a neat find.

Here are a few examples from my parts box. And a couple of bulbs.

Thanks guys! Just one of those things I've never ran across. (Or took much notice when I did) I'd like to think it's from an old Fender guitar amp. Rock on!

My 1964 Bandmaster is in the shop so had to find a photo online...
