OK, I found this old coin today in an area that has yielded many good old finds including coins. However, I have never found anything that looks like this. It was about 8 inches deep and I would say in very very good condition. Sorry I didn't photo it next to a modern coin, it is exactly 1 inch wide (25mm). The only markings I can make out are the V and the B on what I think is the backside of the coin.

Does anyone have any idea what this coin is?

I got the same thing...very cool..I would grade mine as exelent and was found about 2 inches down....

These are very cool. The one on ebay is going for almost 7$ US!!! :wow:
Maybe I should keep this one too as a "neat-o" find for my personal colection...?

Ok, here the deal about the token. I have about 2000 of these left over when I was selling slot machines. The slot machines were made in japan and were used in japaneese casinos. My son and I would buy about 50 of these machines at a time and re-sell them. it's ilegal to sell slots in some states but ones that use tokens are ok. these machines use tokens, although they can be adjusted for quarters. I stll have 4 machines and the coin (token) you found is exactly like the ones we sold to be used in the slot machines. I believe they are slightly smaller than a quarter. The picture show a bag of 200 tokens. We sold the tokens for $.10 each . A 200 count bag was $20.00. Someone on Ebay has one token for $6.75 Buy-it-Now. Looks like it time to sell. LOL

I remember the guy in the mall had some of those machines for sale, probably bought them from you, lol!

It would be nice to get one of those Wheel of Fortune machines for my parents one day, what would that cost?

The only thing I can say with any certainty is that its a token, and its very common. In my research I have run into this token in a lot of places. I have two of them, one is bronze and the other is probably steel. tokensdirect.com has standard token designs (0836 and 1521) that seem to be the same as those on the two sides of this token. So far, people have been looking for an identity for this token for at least the past 7 years, but haven't seen any replies that identify it.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but the token is a general purpose token minted by Van Brook. Tokendirect.com and Van Brook were incorporated into a company called Osborne Coinage Company. Unfortunately, the token is used for all sorts of things including arcade, game machines, vending machines, etc. Nothing special about this token and no specific attribution. Not only that, but there are a lot of them being found over the past 10 years. The token actually is minted in 3 different sizes. The ones that I have (2) are brass and nickel plated brass and are 28.6 mm. When Osborn Coinage Company took over Tokensdirect.com and Van Brook, the kept the stock token designs and their inventory number of 0386 on one side and 1521 on the other. Hope this clears up this topic.

Regards,

Bill

I have similar "coin"

I have a similar coin or token, only in a bit better shape. Couldn't find any indication of country, date, denomination. I'll go with old car wash token or carnival / gaming token.
Any value to someone else? If not, I have grandchildren that may want it.

I found one with I different reverse. it looks to be some sort of dragon cobra thing. About the one that you guys have, it was made by the van brook cooperation in Kentucky (hence VB on the crest), they make all types of tokens. This was produced and sold by them and has no specific use/purpose. I know that they are still being made today so are probably not valuable.

now... I dug up one recently with a different reverse, I have no information on it. However, it looks like some sort of dragon or cobra and has the initials TD on the bottom, and a # on the side. I have reason to believe that it is not from the Van Brooks cooperation since the crown design on the obverse, has been used by other companies. Ex: Tuning electric entertainment. Note: I found it in Canada.
:bling:
Here are some pictures: (crusty)

edit: wow those pictures turned out bad, the are sideways oh well.

This item was made by VanBrook Tokens manufacturer. hence, the "V.B"

The company was started in 1964, so the token "might be" 50 years old.... or not.
You can see it on their web page as "general purpose token #836

https://vanbrooktokens.com/availabletokendesigns.htm#carwashtokendesigns
You will need to scroll down to general purpose tokens to find it.

The age of an item has no relation to the depth of the find. I've found confederate soldier's buttons and unfired mini balls on top of the ground that have been lying there more than 150 years, and have dug modern clad 10 inches down. Every day that I dig I marvel at how fast some things get buried.

Wow. I just read this whole thread......and then noticed the dates.... Thanks guys.....that's 3 minutes I'll never get back.....

Is the area prone to flooding, on a slope, etc.? Might explain the depth. I detected near a river and dug a can up from almost 2' down. :digginahole: It sounded like a good tone at first. I'm still learning. I didn't stay there too long, was super trashy. Will go back when I get better!
