I like to find old maps of the areas I will hunt. They have always given me at least one interesting area to target.

I use this site frequently for older maps:
https://www.oldmapsonline.org/

You pick the area you are interested in and it finds maps of that area. I find it's best to view the map, then right click and save as an image, as I can zoom in much closer to see details of the old maps that way.

I then bring up the same area on Google Earth and look for areas no that are no longer actively lived in today, that could have been between late 1800's and early 1900's.

I also use my local parcels map to find owners of the land, or to confirm state owned land.
For me this is the Utah County parcels map, but there should be something similar in your area.

One of the most powerful ways I have used this parcels map is to search by city or state owned parcels, then look at those city and state owned lots on Google Earth to see what history is around them potentially adding value.

I hope this helps you in your R&D Efforts before you hit the ground. I have found that an hour in the chair before I head out to detect is often very well spent. Even if I know the area I will hit, looking at it from above can provide insight into features you won't see from the ground.
