Went to Grandparents today for family BBQ and did some metal detecting around the yard and cellar. I found a Westmorland Sterling silver spoon out in the yard about 4in deep. Also, found a 1857 one cent. Both of these were first for me first silver ever and first old coin. AWESOME right I was excited. Now want to know what to do with them should i clean the coin with anything else other than water? And where should I take the spoon?

Found out that the 1857 Large cent has only like 330,000 minted. Does this make it really rare today? Should I clean this anymore or take in to be evaluated?

the 1857 large cent i would consider pretty rare can go for some good money even in vf i might try to get the dirt off by picking it with a toothpick but you have to be very careful you can also clean some coins with acetone which is an alternative to water or distilled water. some would recommend to try not to clean it at all . if you can weigh the spoon and see that sterling marks i'm sure you can sell it on ebay or something if you wanted

I would take it to at least two coin dealers and compare what they say.....some dealers are smarter and more honest than others.....
