Found this token yesterday. A bucket lister for me :)

N.L. WOLD
GOOD FOR 5 CENTS IN TRADE

It’s nickel sized.

Couldn’t find anything on it?? Found in Auburn, Ca.

Would like to know age and what?

Appreciate any help, it’s my first ever good for/trade token?

And is it called a “trade token” or “good for token”?

Thanks!

I'm not an expert but this is indeed a Good For 5 cents in trade brass token, sometimes called merchant tokens, sometimes called “good fors”, these tokens in the United States and Canada go back to the end of the 18th century, they were used more and more after the civil war.

Late 19th and early 20th century tokens are generally identified today and are highly sought after by collectors.

I also searched for N.L. WOLD but unfortunately I didn't really find anything about this, N.L. WOLD can mean anything.

I do some more research tomorrow, thanks for uploading.

Appreciate the reply.

I may have found a connection, but still lacking in details (I’m going to keep looking as well).

But then I'm not sure, as when I look up Louis Wold in Auburn, CA I see his name was:

Louis L. Wold.... so N.L.WOLD? I have some historic books I need to flip through and see what I can find. Just because I found this token in Auburn, doesn't mean it is directly from, could be though.

You definitely have a good for token.
My research found nothing on this name either.
Your best bet will be a local historian, library.

These were very common in the late 1800's early 1900's.
When somebody bought the house a round, instead of the bartender pouring more beers, he would give each patron a token.
Then the patron could save or use at his will.

Thanks Matmit! I will have to see who I can go to locally here! Going to not give up. Thanks!

Update

Thanks to the Placer County Historical Society, I have an ID for this token!

It is a token for a cigar store that was in the Plaza Saloon, Auburn, CA (1894-1914?). They sent me this clipping from October 30, 1909 Placer Herald newspaper.

Needless to say I'm pretty stoked to have found my first ever token, and a local one!

I couldn't find any other token like this online, so that's pretty cool too.
