I posted a copy of this in the finds forum,, but now I have a question,, why would a gold broach show up as a nickel on my F5 display ?

This got my curiosity aroused so I got out this 1852 $20 gold piece from my collection and the Fisher will not recognize it.

Will the Fisher F5 detect gold reliably? (I hope) or is this just a case of my inexperience with the settings of the machine

Gold can come in anywhere from iron, foil, nickel, tab, zinc because of the various gold contents and base matals.

That brooch does not look like gold to me, but I am no expert.

I LOVE my Fisher F5!

Agree with ND. Gold will clean up like it's new! If the F5 don't pick up the 20$ GOLD piece, think I'd find a new detector, I also think the F5 would nail the 20$'s hard. Something's a miss:?:

I hit a nice 7.9 g men's band and it came up as a solid nickle.

If your f5 doesn't hit on that $20 coin there is something wrong.

That should come in nice and solid.

I pick up tiny ear rings with mine.
