I took on some new duties at my work which included using the cash box sometimes. I noticed one section of misfit coins where they'd stuck Canadian quarters, a few other foreigns... and this 1907 V nickel. I happily traded them a current nickel for it. A few weeks later, I was detecting along a sidewalk at work and hit the 1897 V - the plant was built in 1946, and other than square nails, this is the only thing that appears to date back to when this was a block of houses. Dunno how the clean V got a digger kiss on the back though!
