...and even a Roman coin from 134 AD.
Ha ! A coin from 134 AD !! In Kansas !! This is proof that the Romans were in Kansas before 200AD then, eh ? Proof positive, eh ? (Hard to argue with the date on a coin after all, doh!
)
I knew a guy who found a similarly dated coin (from the century surrounding BC/AD) in a Monterey, CA oldtown demolition site tearout. He attributed it ... no doubt .... to a soldier returning from WWI or WWII , with a pocket-souvenir.
There was a time, during the "Egyptology craze" of the 1920s ,where it wasn't uncommon to find ancient coins on the market for sale. So, for example, a tourist walking the streets in a tourist city in Egypt, could simply buy an ancient coin from street side table vendors. Hence coin collecting and souvenirs is not a modern concept. And while it's rare and unusual, it's entirely possible for someone to loose an ancient coin, today.
I knew another guy who found a choice seated quarter, on the dry sand at a touristy beach. It was still in the plastic sleeve with the price tag of the coin store on it. Doh!
