Hit the lake today and detected a nice carved out section of sand. Mostly a crummy hunt until I pulled this little relic, a first for me. It's a naval aviation "observer" pin. I can only imagine this is the real mccoy, except mine has a slight variation to it. There is a deliberate hole just off-center. It looks like it was made this way. Anyone know anythings about these things? I can't seem to find any photos of one with a hole in it. Anywho, happy hunting!

Love militaria !

Me too! So much respect for our armed forces

A super recovery! That is the first of its kind that I've seen posted on this forum. Congrats! Trapper

Wow, that's quite the compliment :) Thank you

Sweet find,...love anything with wings :takeoff:

When I dug it I thought it was trash there was so much buildup. Glad I took the time to investigate more and saw the wings coming through. A first for me...

Very cool find!

Thanks!

Gotta love that. Nice find.

Thank you!

No clue on the hole. Nice find. Is it sterling?

It appears to brass but I'm not 100%

Nice to see a piece of military history saved.

Agreed

It dawned on me there was a boys military school about a mile down the road. It operated from 1933 - 1970's. A good chance this relic originated from that school.

I also found this website of a guy that sells similar pins. I'm going to try emailing and see if they have any knowledge of this pin.
