Cool find! I found a medical disc last year that I think is WW1. The back looks the same as yours

Could be a garrison cap insignia. But more commonly this is a collar insignia. Also it is not a WW1 insignia. It is what collectors refer to as a Type II insignia, the US Army switched to this type around 1926 and used them up until the late 30s or so. If my mind serves me correctly this insignia would signify an unassigned individual.
