hey guys, i recently asked if i should buy the ace 250 or an pinpointer. I got convinced that i should buy the pinpointer, however there were 2 pinpointers recommended for me to buy. But which one should i buy and what are the differences between them? i tried to find something myself, but couldn't come to an clear conclusion, and i couldn't find if the trx is waterproof. So I would like to hear your thought on this.

I do not own a Garrett PP. However I have been reading the forums for 6 months and the PP has some serious quality issues and has limited depth. This unit USED to be the top dog but no longer. The New Whites TRX was designed from the ground up and is very well built. It is sold as weather resistant because it was not loud enough when they were prototyping and made it 100% water proof. For normal day to day use in rain and shallow creeks, I would not worry about it leaking. The unit is sealed. The sound opening is diaphram of some kind, probably Gortex or rubber the piezo driver is inside on the board. Phil Myers put is in a bucket and held it under water with a brick (cause it is air thight and floats) for 30 minutes with no leakage. I have removed the battery cap and sucked a vacuum on the insides of the unit with no leak. The guts also come out with the removal of 1 screw so the case can be replaced if it should ever get damaged. I have dropped mine from 5 ft onto concrete more than once with no damage. The depth I get in undisturbed dirt is 4" for a coin. I would not trade the TRX for a case of Propointers.
Some TRX threads, unfortunately TRX is to short to use as a search string..

Take some time and think about your own method of detecting then try to fit the pointer to that style. The old Gpp is a fixed function unit that has limited range. The TRX is a adjustable unit that can operate in both a fixed setting or can be advanced to the depth nearly double of the Gpp if needed and returned to a lower fixed setting again by one touch of the button if desired. The TRX seems to have a higher degree of water tightness without any modification. The Gpp has a history of issues but has good support. The TRX has so far (about two months) shown very little failures. Both sell for about the same price. Both are supported by good companies, though there are now reports of some high charges for repairs to older Gpp units. Both are about the same size and weight. Enjoy your new TRX when you get it and happy hunting.

I've never had a complaint with the 2 Garretts ProPointers which I bought back in 2010. I don't have any experiences with device failures on either in all that time.

I did get the TRX, mainly because I wanted the extra depth without having to trick the Garretts with a coin or have to carry a Pistol Probe which gets great distance, yet there were things I really disliked about the Pistol besides having to carry it along with my Garretts. So, the TRX is great for getting an easy 2.75-3 inches, which happens to be the depth of the majority of my detection targets pre-dig, and that saves me hole size dimensions.

The Garretts has served me well and I'll always have one. You might consider buying one of the Garretts soon to be sold by owners since getting the TRX, and save some bucks off of retail. Seems to me that about $75 for a good operational used Propointer is feasible. I am reading some pricey repair quotes from Garretts lately for fixing a few returns. Used to be that Garretts would repair an outta warranty unit or just charge $25-30 at worst.

The TRX will be my keeper though unless it fails badly. It has only been out like 2 months, so time will have to tell. If I was buying my first pinpointer today it would likely be the TRX.

It's a little hard to explain though, but I believe I could actually retrieve targets a little faster with the Garretts if 1-4 inches. The entire wand end of the Propointer being hot maybe cause me to say that, even though it doesn't do 3 inches with factory setting of 3" like the TRX. There's lots of good things about both pointers. martin

Either one will do the job. If the Garrett develops problems they will take care of it for quite a while for free minus shipping. I like the TRX better myself. I have stated my opinion in quite a few of these threads. Take a leap of faith and take the plunge. If you don't like what you bought sell it and get the other.

owned three pro pointers. Own a pro find, pistol probe, and TRX. Switching from the propointer to a TRX was like going from a Ford Pinto a GT40:lol:

No competition right now for the TRX !! I own the Garrett ProPointer, Minelab ProFind and the TRX. The Garrett needs to go in for an overhaul (about once a year for me), the Minelab was only taken out of the box to test then put back for a backup, the TRX goes with me on every hunt and it is awesome !!!

I left my TRX at home by mistake yesterday and drive a hour to a spot before I realized it. I had a Garrett with me and I almost didn't hunt because I so like the whites. After a few minutes I was back in the hang of the Garrett but it is definitely a step down. In reality they are both very good, but if you can afford the TRX, get it, if not the PP will serve you just fine.

The TRX won't cost that much more than the GPP if you shop right. The Propointer fits me well as a backup and in most cases, I think I can equal the retrieval time in recovery on moderate depths compared to the TRX, or beat it in actual recovery time. The 360 degree energy glow area at the tip and down the whole side on the GPP, reaching out to an inch and half all around really comes in handy for targets in the walls or 90 degrees from the tip. With the TRX, it sometimes takes time to angle the tip on the TRX just right at times if the target is on the side, due to the TRX's narrower focused flashlight beam directly out of the tip. That adds time for me at least.

If I need to use my Propointer in a jam, it'll work for me just as it has for 4 years. I'll always choose to pack both along when I get out. martin
