Ok, so "MatMit" here on the forums turned me on to
my very first tear out this morning.

First of all, "who the heck gets up at 5:30 in the morning to
go detecting!! lol I did that when I use to fish a lot but didn't
think I'd have to be doing that detecting also.

Dont know much about detecting a tear out although I have driven by
streets that have been completely torn up before.
So Matmit gets there first this morning so I figured by the time I got there
he would already be in the middle of the street detecting. Little did I know
that you dont detect the street but the curb grassy parts that have been
scraped down.

And then I show up with my Etrac with an Ultimate 13" coil. I wish I could
have taken a picture of Matmits face
Hey, I figured we were going to be detecting the street...lol

When I saw the part "we were" going to be detecting which was not very flat with
mounds of dirt sticking up everywhere I think the words that came out of my
mouth were, "Oh Cr@p!!!!"

Well, the ultimate 13 coil was all I had so after getting a few pointers from Mat
I started hunting. Well just 20 feet into my hunt I got a 1917D Mercury.
A little bit later a 1888 indian and before the hunt was over 6 wheaties and
a small 10 cent token.
Guess what I will be looking for as I drive around town from now on??!!

Tear outs are pretty cool....even a shallow 1 inch signal could be a potential
great coin. You definitely dig a lot more signals then you would if you were lets
say, hunting at a park.

Thanks to Matmit for the hunt....who by the way didn't go home silverless either
getting a Rosie, a 1910 V Nickel and a handful of Wheaties and some old cool
looking ornate buckles.

The guy with the car in the picture didn't do so well unfortunately

Hey Buddy! You wanna move your car, there could be a silver coin underneath
there! lol

R, still looks like you had a good time.

There is a learning curve to the hobby.

What was Matt running for a coil?

I still like the color of that older Accord that failed to heed the lighthouse's warning.:laughing: Many a good car has ended up on those rocks!

WOW looks like a great place to door knock. Looks like most of the homes are from the 30's and 40's . If the curbs are original grade. Lawn may be the same. Great hunt. Guy's like Mat and the people on this forum make this one of the best hobby ever. People that are all ways will to help out a new detectorist.

The driver of that vehicle must be an idiot

He was a real young kid.......I guess that could constitute as Idiot as we all were at
one time......Young and stupid. Felt bad for him. I talked with him an seemed like a
real nice kid who just wasn't thinking.

Mat had a really small coil on his ATpro. Not sure what size. All I know is that it
was about 10 times smaller than mine

Ya, I guess that really was a light house warning

Ya, this is the first time I met Mat....really nice guy and he sure knows that ATpro.
I'm actually not new the hobby but am definitely new to hunting tear outs.

This area we were hunting really isn't the kinda area you would want to be door
knocking at.

Never hunted a tear out, was it trashy? Which coil faired better on getting good signals vs iffy ones? I imagine there would have been a difference in the 13 to the smaller one, I realize two different detectors, but wondering if there was a notable difference?
