I know I shouldn't try to clean this but I'd really like to figure out the date. What would you guys recommend?

warm peroxide might work on that coin

no water and a blunt toothpick. you will think you are wrecking it till you see how beautiful it it is

The coin you have was minted from 1797 until 1807 so that'll narrow it down some for you. If you want to know the complete date maybe try cleaning just in the area where the date is.
