It's not the most elegant solution, but I decided to use 1" schd. 40 PVC as a travel handle for my big scoop. The little travel scoop I made is nice, and works well, but doesn't move enough sand at the beach to be very effective in the surf, so I wanted a solution that would allow me to use my big scoop. Below you see my results.

I cut the pipe in half and used a straight connector and PVC riser (both glued in the bottom half) to connect the halves and provide strength to the joint. An old bicycle inner tube makes a grippy handle. The whole contraption will fit into my suitcase for my pending vacation and work travel in the next couple of months.

Used this a few times, now, in dry and wet sand. Even pried a few things up out of the sand, and the handle is solidly holding up! I did insert a wood dowel at the scoop end to reinforce the area where most of the force is applied to the pipe. Works a treat!
