Civil War Drummers Insignia

I found this earlier today. The only thing I've been able to find out about it is that it's rare and possibly went on a drummer boys hat or worn by a member of a regimental band. How can I authenticate this piece?

Don't know anything about it but I do know that is is a super cool find! Congrats, I hope you find some more info about it.
 
Hi, thats a nice find. I have found a similar if not identical drum as yours, i thought it was part of a toy or something. i will be home tomorow night then i will dig it out and post a picture of the drum to compare it to yours.

Hi, hope your well, i looked through my finds and found my drum bage. its exactly the same as yours it just has no paint left on it. Imagine finding the same find a few thousand miles apart. i really did not know what this was until you posted your find.

Mike is an expert at military insignia. You mine as well start with the best in the field for identification.
