They have covered this very well on our history channel. Very interesting mission. Rob
 
It was one of the great stories of WW II, and was made into a very good film.
The main aim of the mission was to deny a water supply to the Ruhr valley, and the factories there.
It was really more of a moral boosting raid, as the dams were repaired fairly quickly. A lot of brave men died though.
