Hello,

Can anyone tell me if a Garret 400 GTAx is a decent detector ? I've been out of the hobby for several years and I'm getting ready to buy another one so I can get back into it. The last one I had was a Whites 6000d . Thanks

NO

I had the GTAx 500.

Man! It was so old, I had to rebuild the battery harness with
Radio Shack parts.

It worked, but it would not detect a woman's gold ring 1/2 inch
from the coil.

It would air test good on coins, but I never found a coin in the
ground very deep with it.

I was so disappointed!!!

I qutit using it and used my Bounty Hunter until I found Tesoro
uMax light weight detectors.

Now all I have is 5 Tesoro uMaxes.

Happy Huntin,

is it a good deal

Ok Thanks for the help. I'll keep looking. I've seen the tesoro brand but I was unfamiliar with them.

Tesoro is nice, but they have no display and most
only have a single tone.

It is a great way to hunt, but it drives a lot of folks
nuts not knowing the basics.

The Garrett Ace 250 is the most successful starter
machine.

Happy Huntin,

TabDog gives great advice.... and has the track record of finds to prove it. I agree... the 250 seems to be a great starter machine.... HH RickO

I used to hunt with a gent that used a 400. He did very well with it somedays much better then me with finds. I would see if you can test run it first before you buy.
If I recall the 400 had a closed loop coil so it is a little hader to pinpoint with.
Nothing wrong with the tesoro though. I do love mine.
