How can you find out when a house was built? Do I need to go to county records or is there somewhere on the internet I could get that information.

That's what I use for the most part. Zillow.com
Look up the address and select the details. Year built is listed, if zillow knows about it. I have found a couple of old houses, where the year built was blank.

I use my county's online auditor website. I just used the same kind o website for a school in a neighboring county. Just to to google and type: "xxxxxx county auditor". Xxxxx being your county name. Mine has a ton of info for houses I search: year built, owner name, mailing address (if different), most recent sale and amount, map with property boundaries, etc. I can even use it to search open fields that don't have an address. All I need is a nearby address and I can go to the map and find parcel IDs for the whole area including the vacant lots/fields and owner name.
