Hi Folks,

best best iron find ever!

This was in an area of bush, recently cleared out by our local council exposing some new areas to detect.

here it is fresh out of the ground. A shallow target only a few inches down.

Dirt scrubbed off it:

small hole drilled in it for screw for alligator clip to clip onto for the electrolysis. I didn't have a manual battery charger so adapted a phone charger. Around four hours later, and after taking it out several times and knocking rust off it and rubbing it down. Also I used baking soda and salt in the water and processed it outside.

finally I used a dremel on the brass

I didn't have paraffin wax so I used what I did have which was renaissance wax

I see the renaissance wax as a temporary measure to slow rusting until I can get the paraffin wax , confectionery thermometer, and outside means of heating sorted. When I do I'll fill that small hole too!

I hope this the first of many antique iron restoration projects!

Happy hunting!

I have an old lock like that it hangs from my rear view mirror in my truck.
Back then they put true craftsmanship into things.
Great find and good job on the resto.
