I worked a really old farm site about 500 feet from an 1850-1958 rail line. I found an old spike. It was about 10 inches down, has corrosion like warts on it lol, and is a little shorter than a modern spike. The head looks hand forged although it’s covered in rust. I read that leaving it in white vinegar will get it off - then a wire brush. Should I try that?

I'm no expert but I guess clean the dirt of, then vinegar. You'll find a lot of info here on electrolysis, too. Might be a good piece to practice on.

I have a short one like that, as well.
