Default RTG Scoop Modifications

After using my RTG scoop in Lews " rock garden", I realized I needed more modifications than just a stainless steel lip.

My toes were killing me after the hunt because the pad on the back of the scoop was at such a poor angle that I couldn't put my foot on it to really apply pressure to get into the rocks. Also, after using my Stavr scoop with a grab handle on it I'm spoiled....I really like it, ( the grab handle ).

So, my pal CJ had a piece of aluminum pipe the right diameter, that he was kind enough to let me have and I had some diamond plate for the kicker.

I removed the old kicker and made a new one at the angle I wanted. I then cut the pipe to the length I wanted and coped it to fit the exsting handle. If you notice, I had already drilled 1/2" holes all the way to the S/S lip for better drainage. I had a local shop weld everything because my welder isn't set-up to weld aluminum.

The only thing else I will do is add some 1/4" or 3/8" hardware cloth to the inside circumference, toward the back of the scoop.

With these mods the scoop feels great and should be what the doctor ordered.

I should wrap up my sifter tonight or tomorrow and I'm ready for action. Thanks for looking.

Looks nice.... My question is why didnt you put the new handle closer to the scoop.... I've been contemplating putting one on mine... I think the leverage/balance point is farther down the shaft..... How is this working for you??? I am scooping wet sand, dryer sand may make the equasion different..... What is the yellow stuff on the handle??

The foot plate is a big winner.....

It's a matter of preference, everyone likes something different, some like them high, some low . Some of these hand grabs are on the side, I don't think I would care for that but some people do. The handle that is on my other scoop is at the same hight and it works great FOR ME so I put this one in the same location, someone else might not like it.

Believe me when I say the plate that was on the scoop was a killer. It was just slightly rounded and smooth. When you tried to use it, your foot ( toes ) would want to keep sliding off. Craig suggested to glue non skid material on it but I didn't like the angle either so remided both problems.

The yellow stuff is electrical tape.

I had to look twice to recognize the RTG part of that scoop...

Congratulation on a job very well done - I can't think of one single thing which you have not allready improved, and would definately prefer your scoop to the original RTG scoop (and RTG allready made a good scoop - Yours is just better)

HH.
