Outdoor Noticings...

Haven't seen any ladybugs for years, been replaced by imposter bugs. Very few yellow and black spiders ( golden orb ) I think the yellow jackets killed them off.

Now that you mention it I don't remember if I saw any ladybugs this year yet, maybe some earlier in the year, but usually we would have times during the year where there were bunches of them crawling on the outside of the window on the sunny side of the house, last year it may not have been as much, I'll see if we get any more this year.

My most unusual sighting this year was the mean old b*****d in the photo below. I was out for a morning walk and he was crossing the road. At least 1/2 mile from any water. Shell was about 18” and he was not a morning person!

Yum you better believe a snapper that size would end up gobbled up, no hesitation. Turtle soup! Make it snappy!

How you know it’s a he?

I never would have went that far...

Neither did I, I was kidding. It could have taken off a finger or three. He was probably 40 pounds or more. He was also in a bad mood. 🤬

Actually, it was a "she". They make a pilgrimage like that to lay their eggs each year. When I find them in the road like that, I toss them into the ditch on the side they were headed toward and wish them a safe journey. I won't take one like that to eat, because I want them to keep making babies.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea they payed eggs so far from water.

The females sure like the road edge to lay eggs. I see them a lot in May.

Where I'm at at the south tip of Lake Michigan we usually see most of the ladybugs in Sept-Oct during the midday sun. Then they get into the house and outbuildings where they seem to survive after that. Same for stinkbugs but haven't seen any yet this year (had enough in 2017 to last a lifetime).
I have seen a marked increase in Monarch butterflies this summer. And tons of dragonflies in daytime and lightning bugs at dusk.
