UK Tour Best Finds and “THE SHORT CROSS HOARD”

What an adventure! The last two weeks digging in the UK with Chris Langston from Metal Detecting Holidays, Brandon Ray Neice (aka DrTones), Rick Lesquier and Nathan Dinning was amazing. Not only did I dig two bucket listers (roman and hammered), I made lifelong friendships….and oh yea, we FOUND A HOARD!

My best 5 finds of the trip were:
#1 - the second King John Short Cross hammered (1199-1216)

#2 - Medieval lead seal matrix (1200s)

THE SHORT CROSS HOARD

International Metal Detectorists discover medieval scattered short cross coin hoard at a undisclosed location in North Shropshire!

Finding a hoard is a metal detectorists dream find and everyone involved in the discovery are very happy to have saved 800 years of history!

All 14 coins are short cross silver which date 1180AD to 1247AD and were found by:

Carlotta Brandenburg
Jocelyn Elizabeth
Beau Ouimette
Tim Saylor
Brandon Ray Neice
Ken Cunliffe
Chris Langston

Shropshire Finds Liaison officer Peter Reavill is dealing with the recording of the hoard.

When the short-cross penny was introduced in 1180, This style remained more or less unaltered until 1247, which gave both the coinage and the state a sense of stability. The practice of placing the moneyer's name and mint on the reverse continued, though the reduction in the number of mints enabled better quality control to be applied. The Tealby coins bear the obverse inscriptions HENRI REX ANG, HENRI REX AN, HENRI R ANG, HENRI REX, HENRI REX A, or HENRI REX – Henry King of England, or King Henry, while the short-cross pennies are inscribed HENRICUS REX. Short-cross coins were minted at Carlisle, Exeter, Lincoln, London, Northampton, Norwich, Oxford, Wilton, Winchester, Worcester, and York.

Awesome! So how does that work? Do you get to keep them once they’re recorded?

Those are awesome finds. Brits are so lucky to be able to find items dating back to the Romans (and older!).

Nice pieces of history!

Good question, what could you bring home?

Thanks!

Nothing was able to come home with me today. If they don't take an item/coin as treasure, the export license takes about 9-12 months. It looks like we'll get the coins back even though it's been declared a hoard.

Those are some nice coins you guys have taken from the grasp of Father Time. Man that looks like a great trip, hope you do a post trip report on the performance of your detectors vs the soil, from that part of the rock. Are those coins headed to a person collection or a museum?
Who buys buys the first pint? Best find, or oldest find?:kingdances:

The trip really was perfect storm of great people and great finds.

Those short cross hammered were deep and Brandon let me swing a couple of his targets before he popped the plug and I was not able to hear them. I switched back to my deep US program and once I made the change I could hear them and found two myself. Based on was was being recovered, I thought the deep US program was a better option for that specific field. The other fields I hunted I used the UK version of CTTODDs program, basically 2 tone and dig everything.

Yes, we did have a best find of the day buys a shot. I think I ended up buying 3 of the 10 days. :cheers3:

What kind of detector are you using and size of coil? You said deep about what was the average depth you are seeing these coins at?

What a great find and trip you had. Sure looks like fun.

Thanks, it was a blast.

I was using my Deus with a 13x11 coil. The one was about 10-12 inches deep and had a little bend to it. So, the signal was really funky. It was very scratchy and sounded a lot like the coke that littered the site. The Nox Brandon was using did a really nice job of finding the hammereds without hitting the coke.

Amazing!! :shock::wow::shock:

Just wondering, when did this hunt take place?

I just got back, it was from March 17 to March 28.

Man that sounds like some really tough ground to operate in. Amazing you guys were able to find anything.
