Spent several hours in heat, briars, brush, bugs and etc and only found this Great Seal something and a Tootsie Toy Ship.
Need help with the Great Seal Item. 1 1/2 inch across, the back looks like it had something attached . A single point on contact like a nail? I’ve seen bridle Rosette with two points on contact on back. So I’m baffled by this. Nothing else was in hole even though it looks like something recently detached from back.
The other odd thing on this is the ring of stars on top is oval rather than round like most great seals
All thoughts appreciated

Hat badges typically had a single screw post in the back that went into a grommet like hole in the hat. Could be a hat badge similar in detail to this one.

Ok, not disagreeing with anyone, but on the hat badge examples I can find online, you can’t see the pattern of the eagle on the back…. They all are solid metal with the stud and eagle on front only. This one seems to have been two piece something?? But then I can’t explain the obvious attachment point on the back??
This item is thin and flimsy, I don’t know, hoping someone has additional ideas…….

I know Mister E. Bay is not an authority in anything, but there is a seller who claims this is a rare WW2 enlisted mans hat badge. This one matches yours very well. I know that badges in general can be made solid or thin stampings. Thin stampings are more economical and conserve valuable metals. Conserving valuable metal was a common practice during WW2. That makes sense to me, but if it is WW2 I would think we could find more examples of this badge and construction type on the line. Maybe a military collector forum would be the next step. Nice find any way you look at it. It is something special!

At first glance I thought I saw 2 attachment points, but after reading your post closer and looking again, there is clearly one center attachment point. I think noluckl nailed it! Now to figure out which era, WW1 or 2?
