Found this iron thing at a 1820s homestead in Upper East Tennessee that is still inhabited today. It looks like a rifle butt plate but the part at the top is facing the wrong way in my limited conception. Could that have been a hook for strap or hanging? The first pic is of the shoulder side and is concave out and about 6.5 inches by two inches at its widest. The second pic is the back and the third shows the concavity. The fourth shows the top hook or whatever it is.
Can anyone confirm it is a butt plate and if so what rifle did it go to? If not what is it?
Thanks ahead of time!
